    itinerary guideline

Steadily gaining recognition as an integral part of the Hermanus Wine Route, connoisseurs and wine-lovers alike have been quick to add Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to their itineraries. Your private guide will introduce you to this top viticulture spot along the Cape Whale Coast route - visiting an acclaimed wine estate to sample their finest wines. Take in spectacular views and pamper your palate with award-winning earthy wines and delectable chocolate or food pairings.
During whale season (from mid-June to November), Hermanus is arguably the best place to spot Southern Right Whales. Cliff pathways offer unique vantage points to see the whales frolicking in the bay, and optional boat-based whale watching offers an even closer view of these magical creatures. Travel via Clarence Drive where the wild beauty of the Kogelberg Biosphere is perfectly offset by this coastal route, which snakes its way between rugged mountains and the majestic Atlantic. En-route, a visit to 5,000+ resident African penguins at the Stony Point Nature Reserve is a must.

-Early morning pick-up from your accommodation in Cape Town CBD or Stellenbosch.

The itinerary is flexible and can be tailored to your interests within the day's highlights. Let us know in advance and we can make changes accordingly.

Meet your guide at your accommodation in Cape Town and set off in an air-conditioned minivan to begin a full-day private tour of the Whale Coast and Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley, via the N2 Grabouw route.
Literally translated as 'heaven on earth' this wine valley is perched high up on the Hemel-en-Aarde ridge, near the coastal town of Hermanus. Its rich verdant valleys; magnificent mountains; and breath-taking vistas, coupled with some of the most interesting and exceptional wine blends, make for heavenly wine adventures. The wines produced in this area are unique to South Africa, but are similar to those produced in Northern France ¬thanks to the cool sea breeze and clay soil found in the area. Popular wines produced in the valley include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with soft, mineral Sauvignon Blancs complimenting the range.

Arrive at Creation Wines and soak in the views of its rolling vineyards - the optimal setting to relax, unwind, and enjoy their unique pairing creations. Indulge in the estate's award-winning wines and velvety-smooth chocolate pairings or opt for the optional tapas-style food pairing (own expense). A leisurely walk through the vineyards allows for an escape into Mother Nature - breathe in the fresh mountain air in this beautiful Cape Floral Kingdom region, filled with prolific species of fynbos.

After a scenic 20-minute drive, your next stop is Hermanus - one of the best whale-watching spots in the world. Encounter spectacular displays of raw power and elegant water aerobics during a whale-watching walk along the cliff-side pathways. Hermanus lays claim to the only whale-crier in the world. You'll know him by the whale-tail feather in his cap and the mournful echo of his distinctive kelp horn. The whales’ daily arrival is heralded by this world-famous crier, who sounds the alarm during whale season. An optional ±2-hour whale-watching cruise (own expense) is the ideal way to enjoy an up-close and personal view of the Southern Rights - as these 'gentle giants' of the ocean flock to our warmer waters to give birth and to rear their young. Like all wild creatures, there is no guarantee they’ll appear on cue, but there’s always the thrill that you may spot that tell-tale water spout between the waves.

After lunch, venture back to Cape Town with a stop at Stony Point Nature Reserve; home to one of only two breeding colonies of the endangered African penguin in the world. Here you’ll meet these incredibly cute, flightless birds.

Head back to Cape Town via the picturesque Clarence Drive - with its impressive craggy coastline, and try catch the last glimpse of frolicking whales against the pink and amber sunset backdrop. Reach your hotel by ± 5pm.
