The Outeniqua mountain range forms a natural barrier between the arid lands of the Klein Karoo surrounding Oudtshoorn and the coastal belt beyond. Self-proclaimed as the ostrich capital of South Africa, Oudtshoorn boasts a large number of commercial and show farms and sandstone ostrich palaces that hark back to the town’s heyday when feather prices soared.
Oudtshoorn is the sunniest town in South Africa and is protected from the coastal breezes by the mountain ranges surrounding it. On the outskirts of the town, neatly hidden in the foothills of the Swartberg Range, lie the Cango Caves – a chain of spectacular 20-million-year-old limestone formations and some of the finest dripstone caverns in the world.
And yes, you will soon know that an ostrich egg is the equivalent of 24 chicken eggs, and delightfully rich and flavourful... Be sure to add scrambled ostrich eggs to your breakfast order whilst in town or ask for an ostrich steak on the grill.
